Charles Wilkinson, 17, a collar grinder from Clerkenwell, was tried and convicted at the London Gaol Delivery for stealing a handkerchief valued at two shillings. Wilkinson and his accomplice William Parker were sentenced to transportation for life. Wilkinson sailed for Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) on the Lady East on 4 November 1824. Wilkinson also received a further seven-year sentence for stealing on 4 April 1829. He received a conditional pardon in 1842 and a free pardon in 1844.
