How does this token pertain to Australian convicts ?

Hi Paul – thanks for your question. You are right in that
this particular token does not have anything to do with transportation to
Australia. The token dates from 1762 – 26 years before transportation to Australia commenced. This token is the earliest example in our collection. Part of why it is an interesting token to include in the collection is to demonstrate that convicts bound for a number of destinations other than Australia had been making tokens for many years. This token helps to illustrate the length of the tradition of token making rather than being an example relating to transportation to Australia.
