James Cooper, 20, a shoemaker, was tried and convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery on 15 September 1813 for the theft of clothing. Initially sentenced to death, this was commuted to transportation for life. He sailed for New South Wales on the Somersetshire in March 1814, arriving on 16 October 1814. By 1828 he was listed in the census as having returned to his trade and was working for Mr Tucker at Paterson's Plains in the Hunter Valley.
